Prerequisites
- NXP NTAG 424 DNA NFC Tags (at least 1 to test with). It’s important to note that NXP as well as other printed electronic companies manufacture various varieties of NFC chips and tags with different features and specifications. For the purpose of this use case, it is extremely important to ensure that the tags you purchase are specifically Model. NTAG 424 DNA series tags irrespective of the actual tag manufacture you source the tags from.
- A “FREE” plan account on the Qliktag Platform of your own. You can always upgrade this account to a paid account if you’re ready to scale to a larger number of items; however, a “FREE” plan will suffice to setup and test the tags for a few items. To register for a FREE account, you can use the link below:
https://www.qliktag.com/start-trial/ - An Android smartphone which is NFC enabled. This is required to encode the NTAG 424 DNA Tags with the URL Digital Link generated for each item within the Qliktag Platform. Optionally, a laptop / PC along with a USB NFC Reader Writer device can be used to encode or write to the NFC tags. It’s important to note, not all USB NFC Tag Reader Writer devices are capable of encoding NTAG 424 DNA Tags. Please refer to the NXP website to find a list of compatible reader writers.
Some compatible devices recommended by NXP are:
- Advanced Card Systems – ACR 1281
- HID Global – OMNIKEY 5022
- Identiv – uTrust 3700, uTrust 4701, Cloud 3700
- NXP – Pegoda, Pegoda 2
For the purposes of a pilot project or testing with a few tags and items, we recommend using an NFC enabled Android smartphone instead of a USB device. (Apple iPhones can read 424 DNA tags, however since Apple doesn’t allow writing NDEF messages to tags, it can’t be used to write or encode at the moment.)
